November 10, 2005- Not Needed

Reams and reams of things have been written over the years about America's appetite for oil and the various by-products it produces. Words like "voracious" and "insatiable" are commonly thrown around when describing that as America is and has been the world's largest consumer of oil products for a very long time and that is not about to change anytime soon. That serious oil habit has brought America a lot of problems as well as the creature comforts that it provides, like the Oil Embargo of the 1970's, when the OPEC countries refused to sell America much of any oil and that led to the infamous Energy Crisis of the 1970's in America. Those were the days when lines at the gasoline (petrol) stations were long and you could only buy the shit on certain days anyway, and everyone was told that they had to do their part to conserve energy, like turning off lights when they left a room, and setting heaters and air conditioners at different levels and so on. President Nixon even brought Daylight Savings (summer) Time in the middle of winter because he thought it would conserve energy through lengthening the day, and apparently, everyone was too afraid to tell the dumbfuck that changing clocks does not lengthen or shorten anything, and he found that out after he tried that experiment, because Nixon was seriously concerned over the Energy Crisis, what he hated was the fact that it was all because a bunch of foreign lands would not sell America any oil, so Nixon decided that America had to become self-sufficient in terms of energy by 1980. That was his goal, and he proposed many things to make that happen, like reducing the national speed limit to 55 MPH, and mandating that cars be made more energy efficient, and the most controversial one of them all, drilling in Alaska to get homegrown oil. Everyone knows that Alaska is the most oil rich state in America, texas is second by a long shot, and that there are vast pools of the stuff lying under the land all throughout Alaska. Nixon thought that this oil could keep America's appetite satisfied for many years to come if it was tapped properly, and that might be true, but there were many that opposed that vigorously. That opposition was solely based on environmental concerns, mainly, that this drilling would wreck the Alaska eco-system no end. That system is a notoriously fragile one to begin with, and people thought that drilling for more oil there would total it entirely. Many felt then (and still feel now), that the oil drilling that has been done there has wrecked things very significantly, and man is starting to see the effects of that now, with global warming and the like. However, Nixon did not have to fight that battle, because the OPEC dudes found out that they could not live their lavish lifestyles without the constant American purchase of their oil, so they gave up the ghost and called off the oil embargo and things went back to the way they had been. But the controversy over America's dependence on foreign oil never went away and President Bush had to deal with that issue when he came aboard. He wanted to do like Nixon wanted, to drill all over Alaska and get the oil that is there, after all, it is American oil and Bush felt that America had a Divine right to it. So, the fight started all over again, pitting environmentalists versus Washington and the same rhetoric from thirty years earlier started to fly again. Only this time, there was no OPEC to step in and stop things, as they were being deemed the problem once again.

Bush made the same argument that Nixon did, that America should not be so dependent on these foreign lands for its oil, because these lands will fuck America over any chance they get and the country should have its own supply of oil readily available. When the environmentalists freaked out over the damage that drilling would do, Bush said that he had that covered as well, because the techniques that are used to drill for oil today are far superior to the ones of yesteryear and that would fix everything. In fact, he talked about these groovy new techniques that would not even mess the land up one bit, like no one would even know that it had been done, that was the kind of shit that Bush talked about. He made it seem like the oil could be pumped out and that absolutely nothing would change in the Alaskan countryside. Many said that was a bunch of hogwash, because there was no way that anything like that was possible, sure the techniques of today might not cause as much damage as the old ones did, but they are far from perfect on that front. Ecologists said that the fragile Alaskan ecosystem was stretched to its limit and could not take any more and that no more drilling should ever take place there, no matter how bad America needs the oil. Washington said otherwise, and would not give up on the issue like Nixon did, and kept the pressure on to get it done. The oil lobby is a powerful one, far more powerful than the environmental one, simply because they have way more money, and they have kept the pressure on Congress for a long tome now, they want them to vote on this issue and make it official as to whether or not America will drill for oil in Alaska. Congress had been putting that one off for a while, because they don't need another hassle, but neither side in the issue would relent and insisted that they had to vote on it and make it official. Both sides sent their lobbyists and the cash they could spare to Washington in an attempt to influence Congress their way. Finally, Congress was cornered on the issue, and they said that they'd vote on it soon. Well, soon came in the last few hours, as Congress stayed up late tonight and voted on that controversial issue, and the way they voted was a surprise. Everyone thought that the oil companies would win, as they paid Congress off better and had more clout than the environmentalists. However, that was not the way that It panned out, as Congress voted to say fuck drilling in Alaska, we won't allow it. Environmentalists all over America must be whooping it up royally right now as they hear of that decision, because on the outside, it looks like a clear victory for them. No more fragile Alaskan tundra will be chewed up in the name of oil, and the Polar Bears and seals and moose and musk oxen can all live freely now and not have their habitat destroyed any further. It looks like a triumph of the little guy over Mr. Businessman and a glorious day for the environmentalists, but Congress had its reasons for voting like it did.

Lately, we have heard much discontent from Washington directed at the oil companies. Many there are starting to feel that these companies are just flat out gouging people for their products, as the prices of gas and oil shit have skyrocketed these last few months. Mr. Businessman says that the spate of hurricanes this year had a lot to do with that, as his businesses got wrecked by that shit and had to go offline, but that has not cut it with Washington. Just last week, Speaker Of The House Denny Hastert called for an investigation of all of this, as he said these prices are just too fucking high. Many people across America are worrying about how they are going to stay reasonably warm this upcoming winter as the price of home heating oil is going through the roof just like gas prices are. Now, when it gets down to this level, it affects these Congressmen personally, as many of them drive cars, and they do not paying wild prices to fill their sports cars and limousines up and don't like to see heating bills way up there either. Even tough these people are the ones that run things in America, in the end, they are also consumers and customers of these corporations too, and they do not like being gouged as much as anybody. It seems that Mr. Businessman has forgotten that fact as he has gone hog wild with his prices, like he does not care anymore. He makes it seem as if he is the one running America, not the Congressmen and the like, and that's always a fatal mistake to make. For no matter how much money Mr. Businessman rakes in, he has to rely on Washington to allow it to happen and it seems that he is overstepping those bounds. A perfect way for the egomaniacs that populate Congress to put Mr. Businessman in his place would be to remind him of that via their votes on things concerning him. Oh, they'd take all the money and swag that Mr. Businessman would offer them and run, but that would not necessarily buy a vote. It always has in the past, but that was purely because Washington wanted it that way. If they wanted things to change, they could do that in an instant. By taking al the bribes that Mr. Businessman had to offer them and then screwing him at voting time, Congress would be able to send a powerful message to Mr. Businessman, that they were the ones in charge, not him. If he ever got to big for his britches that would be the perfect way to bring him down. Seeing as how so many people in Washington have been pissed off at the oil industry lately, they had the perfect opportunity to take a big shot at them by voting no like they did. That could potentially cost Mr. Businessman billions of dollars, and it is going to do just that. All the plans that were laid down over this were contingent on Congress saying yes, Mr. Businessman thought that was a sure thing, and now he has to find out otherwise. That would make it seem as if Mr. Businessman is as sad as the environmentalists are glad right now and that he lost and they won, and there was a message sent to him by Washington, namely that he does not run America, no matter how much he might think otherwise. Even with a President that is so clearly his friend, Congress can tell him otherwise and it looks as if they did just that a while ago with that no vote. Maybe America is starting to wake up to the fact that letting these corporations run with impunity is not good for the country, and the leaders are reflecting that with this vote. After all, they could have cost themselves some very nice bribes and such in the future by setting this precedent. Without bribes and payoffs, the poor politicians would have to rely on just their salaries to get by, and those cannot support their regal and lavish lifestyles too long. So why did Congress vote like they did when it has so many costs for them like that?

The answer to that lies in geography. While it is true that Alaska holds a tremendous amount of oil reserves, enough to fuel America for a while, there are even larger reserves elsewhere on earth, namely in the Middle East. That's where the biggest motherlode of the shit lies and always has lain. If America could control that, they don't need Alaska for anything more than a tourist destination and playground and that's what they saw when they voted. They saw that America does not need to rile anyone up and take any risks with its environment and climate by drilling for oil in Alaska, when they can just go and seize everything in the Middle East by force. No one says that further oil drilling in the Middle East will hurt the environment any and that just means more money for America. Now, the trick is to go and seize the oil forcefully, but America has been busy with that by invading Iraq and getting ready to invade Iran and Syria and such. Congress seems to think that America has the upper hand on things there now and is ready to go and conquer wherever needs to be conquered, so they voted no on Alaskan drilling. That way, they don't have to worry about fucking something up in their own country and ruining their own lands, because they can just go and trash the Middle East and fuck up other people's countries. Alaska will always be there if needed, but there is an awful lot of oil to steal from the Middle East first, and that's What America intends to do. That means that there will be no end to the current state of war anytime soon, that the war will be expanded as America goes after the next round of oil fields and reservoirs. That approach is far more profitable to Mr. Businessman, so he is not losing out on anything. All he and Congress get out of this is getting the environmentalists off of their backs about Alaska and that's about it. Besides that, the process of getting that Middle Eastern oil is more of a money maker for many more people than Alaska ever could be because war has to be used to get it, and that spreads the wealth around more. Congress was not sending a message to anyone with that no vote, they were sending profits to Mr. Businessman. Since America is so war happy now they can appear generous and leave Alaska alone and just go to the likes of Iran and take what they have. It will be a very, very long time before America can blow through all that oil and by them all of today's politicians will be dead, and leave the problem to another generation. Meanwhile, they get their jollies making war and killing and conquering and such and stealing the oil in the process. That no vote was a Tantamount declaration of the expansion of the war effort, because if America did use the oil that it already has on hand, they would not have to go and conquer the entire Middle East but they want to do that not just for oil, but for other reasons too. Washington fucking hates the Muslims, everyone knows that, and this war is a good way to put them on the same track that the Native Americas were put on centuries ago, the path to extinction. America not only gets to take the oil for themselves, but they also get to eliminate a race that is hostile to them in the process. That is much more appealing to Washington than wiping out the musk oxen and lichens of Alaska, so that factored into the vote as well. So, there is no victory here for anyone, not the environmentalists, not for America, not even for Congress. It is another lose all around situation, the kind that Congress is famous for getting America into. For stealing that Middle Eastern oil will not be easy, and it will have a terrible price, the price of untold numbers of dead on both sides, a horrible toll for humanity. But Congress does not care about that, they only care about making themselves and Mr. Businessman as much coin as they can and that no vote was another part of that. Human lives will have to be lost just because America refuses to find ways to generate its energy needs without destroying anything and everything. Science could solve America's dilemma here, but they won't be allowed to because that won't be profitable enough and the way Washington proceeds will be. Nixon knew that way back when, and his ideas were all bullshit designed to make war seem a reasonable alternative, and Bush has taken that baton and run with it and pushes the same agenda. America wants that Middle Eastern oil for reasons of ego every bit as much as for its needs because it wants to show everyone how mighty and merciless it is. Alaskan drilling does not meet that need, so the musk oxen are safe for now and the citizens of Iran and Syria and everywhere else that has oil are not. That was the only message sent by Congress in that vote and it's the saddest and most frightening one that they could have possibly sent.
