September 12, 2004- Substitute

Today's column has the same title as a very famous song from The Who from back in the day because we seem to be seeing America act out that song in a very unsettling way. As everyone knew, yesterday was the third anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks, and for the entire past seven days or so, people all around the Western world have heard endless shit about that day everywhere they went. Tributes and remembrances have been the order of the day, just as they have been every year at this time for the last three years, and will continue to be at this time of year for many a year to come as well. One of the themes of this year's remembrance was reiterating why America is at war. All the Washington bigwigs, from President Bush on down, gave stirring patriotic speeches about the war and why it is such a just and noble cause, and then they went into the usual propaganda about how America is not going to stop until terrorism has been eradicated and so forth. That talk has a familiar ring not just because Washington is using it and has used it to describe their objectives in the War On Terror, but because they have used this same rhetoric before. Lately, Washington has been drawing parallels between this war and the Cold War, the period of hostile relations between America and the USSR/CCCP from the end of World War 2 until the collapse of the Soviet scene in 1991. What they have been saying is that this current war is going to end as that one did, even though that one was not really a war, hence the name Cold War, in non-battlefield fashion, with things just sort of sputtering out on the enemy side. They are also saying that like that Cold War, this war will probably be decades in duration and only be won because of America's undying perseverance. There is another parallel between these two wars as well, and that is the propaganda factor. During those long decades of the Cold War, Washington talked about the USSR in exactly the same fashion as they now talk about terrorists. The Commies were heartless, cold blooded killers that had no respect for any kind of dignity or human feelings at all, as they were just brainwashed, robotic thugs that mindlessly obeyed their superiors and did whatever heinous shit that they were ordered to do without question. They were capable of anything and everything, and they were an imminent threat to America and its way of life. Thusly, America had an obligation in the name of God and freedom to go anywhere in the world and stop the USSR and its expansion. Communism was an evil that threatened mankind itself and it had to be halted no matter where and no matter what the cost. And go after it America did, fighting wars in places like Korea and Vietnam and meddling in places like Afghanistan and Nicaragua to ensure that Communism would not spread any further. The Commies were the boogeymen of the era, they were fuckin' everywhere, including where you lived, and they just wanted to destroy you and your way of life in the name of a misguided ideology. Sounds awfully familiar doesn't it? Everywhere that Washington used to mention Commies as evil before, they now mention terrorism. Terrorism, like Soviet Communism, is an ideology, a political thing, not a concrete nation or anything. Everything that America said and did for over 40 years about Communism is now being rehashed as terrorism. Certainly this cannot be an accident, and it's not. America likes it this way for many reasons.

The biggest reason they like it so is because shit like this gives Washington just the excuse that they need to say that America reserves the right to go anywhere in the world and do whatever they please. The fight against Communism was waged in both hemispheres and on all continents. America had troops fighting against Commies or their lackeys all over the place, in South America, Africa, Asia, North America, everywhere. This was perfect for Washington to exercise their expansionist and imperial dreams. America was able to march into some country that has an unstable shitty government and announce that they were there to fight the Commies so you better join up with them or get the fuck out of the way. It also never failed that these countries that America went in to to fight the Commies always had some kind of wealth that Washington coveted. There was always some kind of industry or another that America wanted to take over so that they could funnel the wealth from that to Mr. American Businessman. No matter how much Washington professed to be doing everything purely on humanitarian and other such egalitarian reasons, they never came anywhere for free, the country had to pay them something. Since most of those countries currencies were not worth very much on the world market, America did not take that, they always went for some natural resource that had value everywhere, shit like oil or diamonds or drugs. So, Washington was fighting with one hand and stuffing their pockets with the other, and that was why they never seemed to win anything. These wars raged on and on for years in these countries, and the Commies were never defeated, it was always a stalemate, but a stalemate that made many very rich. The problem was, that America could only go into like one country at a time this way, and there were a whole lot more riches around the world that they coveted so. That was where Nuclear Weapons came in. If America could get the USSR to stage a nuclear strike against the USA, then they had it made, that would be excuse enough for America to basically colonize the world under its banner. So, we had that insane nuclear buildup for all those years, as America stocked up on them, and got the USSR to do so as well, with Washington secretly hoping that they could get the Commies to actually use the things, Washington did not care if they did, all the leaders and those that mattered had a way to escape that, they had all seen to that, so they would survive any nuclear holocaust, and they would then be able to use that as an excuse for global war. There was only one problem with that though, the USSR never did launch anything like that at America. They wanted no part of that shit, they saw what America was trying to do, and they stayed the fuck away from it, all the way until they went out of business in 1991. So, America never did get the excuse from the USSR that they wanted to wage global war against anyone, and that made many in Washington very unhappy until they figured out how to duplicate this situation.

All that was needed was a new enemy as Communism was not really a big deal anymore. That ideal enemy existed in the Arab Muslims and people like Usama bin Laden. That dude was perfect for Washington's needs. He was richer than all hell, and he was a fuckin' spoiled brat that thought of no one except himself and what he wanted, and was crazy enough and had the resources to pull off all kinds of shit, and that he did too. He started with terrorist attacks around the globe, nothing against America itself, and then he graduated to the big stuff. He went and orchestrated the bombings of three embassies in one day in various African countries, and killed and maimed a lot of diplomats and shit. America did very little in reaction to that, as they saw it and decided that it was not enough yet, so the pretended to be after bin Laden when they really weren't at all. Washington called him names and made accusations about him, anything they could do to piss him off more, because they knew that he was already pissed off at the USA because they did not install him as the puppet ruler of Afghanistan once the USSR left there in the late 1980's, because bin Laden thought they would because he had fought with the mujahadeen (the rebel soldiers) and cooperated with and worked with America during that time as well. Since washington promptly blew him off after that, he hated America, but bombing African embassies was not enough. So, America turned a blind eye while he cooked up another plan, and this one involved an American Navy ship. Bin Laden had his minions go and blow a hole in the USS Cole when it was docked somewhere, killing a few American sailors in the process and horrifying America. This time, America took more than token action, they had to, so they went and tried to assassinate bin Laden, and of course, they failed at it. Then they let him go loose again and meet with his buddies and cook up yet another scheme, this one the scheme to beat them all. Washington, for all its bluster and rhetoric, secretly hoped that bin Laden was fucked up enough to do what the USSR never did and give them the excuse they so desired. Washington always knew where that dude was and what he was up to, when the American Government decides that they want to spy on you, they spy, they have all the resources to do so. America knew that bin Laden was cooking up something big, and they actually hoped that it would be big enough to get America to declare global war. Washington got that answer on the morning of September 11th, 2001, when bin Laden and his friends put together the biggest day of tragedy that America had ever seen, that fucker outdid himself and everyone else with that one, he did what the USSR would never do, he fuckin' attacked America itself. He did it in a way that was every bit as effective as a nuclear strike, even more so, as he did what many thought impossible. For all the horror and indignation that Washington showed over that day, they were secretly rejoicing, for they had found their man, and they now had another situation like the Cold War, fighting an enemy that is a ideology not a nation. And thus, the War On Terror was born and continues to this day. Usama bin Laden is not really the evil killer and terrorist that washington makes him out to be, he is the man that did what the old Evil Empire never could do, he blatantly attacked America, and that is what Washington wanted to give them the excuse to start that global war that they wanted with the USSR. No more of this wimpy shit, America was now going for the gold.

So here we are, three years into the War On Terror, and Washington is doing everything that they so fervently fantasized about for so long. They immediately used it as an excuse to declare that the whole world was now a battleground and that everyone was a potential combatant. Now, with this war as an excuse, America does not even have to wait for anyone's approval before they invade another country, Iraq showed that. The USA just blew right in there, not even waiting for the International Community to approve, they said that it had to be that way in the name of America's security, and they took the joint over. It has not mattered that every reason that Washington gave for going there has been disproven , America now controls the flow of the oil in Iraq, and that is a hell of a lot of oil, and that translates into a hell of a lot of money for America. All of this because of terrorists and the threat they pose according to Washington. Now, we hear similar shit about Iran and Syria, two other countries with oil riches for Washington to appropriate. America has flat-out said that they reserve the right to go into any country and change the rulers if they deem them unfit, with unfit being tied into terrorism, as America will call anyone they deem unfit a terrorist or a terrorist sympathizer, and use that as the excuse to go in and take over. Washington has said that they feel that this war is a global war, just like the war with Communism was, and that it has to be fought everywhere. They tell their people that it is now the terrorists that are everywhere and who are out to get them and their way of life in the name of an ideology, and that scares their people into compliance and total obedience. The Commies were not as good for that, as they had never done anything to America itself, and many people had a hard time visualizing them as a real threat. However, the Terror boys have already brought down two huge skyscrapers and attacked the Pentagon, and they have conclusively shown everyone in America that they are indeed a threat to them, so the American people are more receptive to what washington says about terrorists than they were about what they said about Commies. That translates into the American public standing behind the war effort much more solidly than they did in Cold War days, and that helps Washington press on with its agenda. Don't be fooled, this is what Washington has wanted for a very long time now, an out of control war that rages everywhere that they can use as an excuse to take as much of the world's riches as they can. For Washington knows that terrorism is going to be like Communism in one other way, that it will never be defeated or go away. The USSR might be out of business, but Communism still exists, it is just not good enough for Washington to use for anything any longer. Terrorism is the new kid on the block, the cash cow that never stops giving, the goose that lays golden eggs. They have been substituted for Communism because they are far better as far as Washington is concerned. America feels that it will gain riches far beyond anything that they could have ever hoped for in the Cold War in this Terror War, and that is their main objective. Since these terrorists are not as sophisticated as the USSR was and seemingly do not grasp what America really wants to do, they will be perfect boogeymen for the 21st Century. They are better than the Cold War and the War On Drugs combined for what America wants to do. As long as they stay so militant and violent as they have, they will continue to be the perfect substitute for the Commies as far as Washington is concerned. America is doing all that it can to provoke them, as they did with the USSR, all this prison abuse shit and other war atrocities are doing that job very well, thank you. They continue to inflame the Muslims, and that makes it easy for Washington to paint them as a threat that has to be dealt with by any means necessary, and use every means at their disposal to do it. The terrorists are the perfect foe that Washington has been seeking for a long time, the foe that gives them the excuse to throw the rulebook out the window and take everything that they can get their hands on. As long as they remain this way, they shall remain the enemy, once their value diminishes any, they will no longer be the evil force that they were made out to be, and washington will go on and try to find yet another foe, that is, if they have not already taken over the whole world in this war and grabbed all the riches of the planet for themselves, if that is not the case once the terrorists lose their value, someone or something else will be substituted for the terrorists just as the terrorists were substituted for the USSR.
